In Person Centred Counselling the client is considered the expert in their own lives. A client decides how they would like sessions to go and what their goals are.
The therapist’s role is as a guide. Holding the space for the client to explore whatever it is they want to bring.
The counsellor will engage with empathy, genuineness and acceptance. This helps to build an alliance.
The working relationship between counsellor and client is central. The offer of kindness, care and empathy encourages clients to talk about difficult subjects without judgement.
The counselling is non-directive in that the counsellor will not tell you what to do or give you homework to complete.
The aims of counselling are agreed between the client and counsellor throughout the journey. Aims could include personal growth, finding meaning or purpose in life, increase self-esteem and inner understanding.
Counsellors speak of self-actualisation in that every person can grow or self-develop given the right circumstances.

A counsellor might focus on past events, childhood experiences that may have affected current thoughts and feelings.
The therapeutic relationship can allow a client to fully explore their childhood and how past events could be influencing the present.
Free thinking is encouraged allowing a counsellor to hear an uncensored account of the client’s issues.
Psychodynamic Counselling is useful for helping with anxiety, depression, exploration of a client’s inner-self and relationship difficulties.
CBT is a therapeutic approach that helps people to identify and change destructive or disturbing thought patterns that have a negative influence on their behaviour and emotions.
This work is usually structured and directive and involves engagement in practices at home like journalling and thought diaries.

Mindfulness is the practice of focusing attention on the present moment with openness, curiosity, and non-judgment. It involves observing thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations as they arise without becoming overwhelmed or reacting automatically.
Mindfulness can be experienced in counselling through breathing exercises, body scans and meditation.
