Royal Leamington Spa & Online

A safe and supportive space to explore low mood, difficult emotions and the challenges affecting your life

What causes depression?

Depression often begins as a natural, protective response to overwhelming stress, loss, or prolonged emotional exhaustion. When life demands more energy than we have left, our brain and body can enter a state of emotional shutdown to protect us from further depletion.

Part of the brain called the Prefrontal Cortex (which regulates mood and decision-making) and the Amygdala become disregulated, leading to a persistent sense of sadness, flatness, and hopelessness. Instead of a temporary dip in mood, it becomes a heavy, continuous loop of mental and bodily fatigue. This loop traps us in a cycle of negative self-talk, low motivation, and social withdrawal. It aims to keep us safe by conserving energy, but it ultimately hinders our ability to engage with life, experience joy, and remain present. When left untackled, depression can shrink our world, turning a life of possibility into one built around isolation and emotional self-protection.

What Are the Signs of Chronic Depression?

Chronic depression impacts both the mind and body, presenting itself in the following ways:

Mental & Emotional Symptoms of Chronic Depression

  • Constant Low Mood: A persistent, heavy feeling of sadness, emptiness, or emotional numbness that does not lift.
  • Loss of Interest (Anhedonia): Finding no pleasure or joy in hobbies, socialising, or activities you used to love.
  • Irritability & Worthlessness: Feeling constantly frustrated, burdened by guilt, or overwhelmed by a harsh inner critic.
  • Social Withdrawal: Steering clear of friends, family, or social responsibilities due to a lack of emotional energy.

Physical Symptoms of Chronic Depression

  • Chronic Fatigue: Feeling physically weak, heavy, and drained of energy, even after resting.
  • Sleep Disturbances: Insomnia, waking up in the early hours, or oversleeping and still feeling exhausted.
  • Brain Fog & Poor Concentration: Trouble focusing, slowed thinking, memory issues, or a total blankness when making choices.
  • Appetite & Weight Changes: A noticeable loss of appetite or emotional overeating, often accompanied by digestive distress.

How I Can Help with Depression: What to Expect in Our Sessions

In our sessions, we will gently uncover the root causes of your emotional exhaustion. I provide a safe, calm, and non-judgmental space where you can slow down, be heard, and unpack your heavy thoughts. Together, we will work to:

  • Quiet the inner critic and halt the spiral of self-blame and hopelessness.
  • Reconnect with your body’s signals, turning emotional numbness into manageable presence.
  • Explore root causes to see where these depressive patterns and emotional shields first began.
  • Reclaim control over your daily routine, your energy, and your future.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Identify, challenge, and rewire the negative thought loops that keep you trapped.

  • Psychodynamic Therapy: Uncovering the unconscious emotional conflicts and unresolved childhood experiences that fuel your anxiety. Bringing hidden patterns to light, process emotions and develop healthier ways to cope.
